BIO MEDICAL WASTE MANAGEMENT (BMW):



Definition =
                       As per bio-medical waste management & handling rules 1998, "bio medical waste is any type of waste generated during the diagnosis, treatment or immunization of human being or animals or in research activity pertaining to the production of drugs in pharmaceutical company, animal waste generated in the veterinary hospital and also in slaughter house etc.

Bio medical waste management divided into different categories :

#category no.1=

             

                  Anatomical waste

List of items - Human anatomical waste (tissue, placenta, body parts)

Location -Operation theater , burn unit, labour room, histopathology.

Container- 30 litre yellow bucket with yellow polythene cover.

#Category no.3=

                


List of items-microbiology & biotechnology waste & other  laboratory waste ( waste from clinical samples, pathology, biochemistry, hematology, blood bank, laboratory 

Location -All the units in our hospital.

Category no.4=
                     Sharp material 


List of items -waste sharp needle, glass syringe with fixed needles, used blade or razor, glass slide, prickers, suture needle etc, that may cause puncture & cuts.

Location -Operation theatre, All the wards and units in our hospital. 

Container- Needle container.

Category no.4=
                      Ampoules & vials


List of items- Amoules or vials 

Location - Operation theatre, and All the units and wards in our hospital 

Container - 8 Litre blue bucket (without polythene)

#Category no.5=

                  Cytotoxic drugs


List of items- Discarded medicines, cytotoxic drugs(cancer ) out dated medicines cytotoxic drugs syringes,  & bottle used for cytotoxic drugs (separate bags with detailed documented)

Location - All the units in our hospital. 

Container- 8 Litre yellow bucket with yellow polythene. 

Category no.6=

                  Socked gauge pieces 

List of items- Gauge piece, dressing pad, cotton pad, cotton swab, plastic sheets, polythene, gloves and soacked clothes and material (other than MLC(mediacal lego case) ), facemask, cap, disposable apron.

Location - All the units in our hospital and operation theatre.

Category no.7=


                  Solid waste material 

List of items- Infectious solid waste, rubber gloves (for infected person ) & vaccutainer with blood foley's cathther, urobag, draintubings, drain bag, minicom prp set,  prp bag, blood set, blood bag, 
              I/v set without sharp syringes I/v cannula, k-90, colostomy bag, ryles tube.

Location -Specially operation theatre and OPD's and all the ward in hospital. 

Container - 30 Litre blue bucket with blue polythene. 

Category no.7=

                                Gloves

List of items- for rubber gloves, (reuse only for cleaning and sample handling)

Location -All the unit in our hospital. 

Container - 30 Litre blue bucket with 0.5% sodium hypochloride solution. 

Category no.7=

                     Plastic bottles

List of items-solid waste, I/V glass bottles plastic hanger, plastic bottles. 

Location - All the units in our hospital. 

Container- 60 litre blue bucket without polythene  

INFECTED PATIENT -

-60 Litre green bucket with 0.1% sodium hypochloride solution. For the HIV, HBV, HCV, patient open tuberculosis case chicken pox and infectious disease Linen clothing. 

-Sputum mug with potassium monoper sulphate (1gm) near viral pneumonia tuberculosis patients bedsides.
